William Richard Glassman

William Richard Glassman

William R. Glassman, 73, of Blaine, Washington, passed on to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at St. Jospeh Medical Center in Bellingham, WA. He was born in Everett, WA on August 24, 1939, the son of Richard Mayford and Sarah Ann (Turner) Glassman. After having completed 11 years of education in the Anacortes School District, his parents decided to move to Eureka, CA, where Bill completed his senior year of education. During this time he became an accomplished pole vaulter; and, as a member of the Eureka High School Band, played during intermission at the East-West Football Playoff. Immediately after high school graduation, Bill began employment with the Washington State Ferry System as a ticket taker. He went to engineering school and subsequently became an engineer and worked his way up to Chief Engineer's position. His career with the Washington State Ferry System spanned 33 and one half years with retirement beginning in 1992. On April 8, 1998, he married Betty Fuhr Martin, and they enjoyed a very loving relationship until his death. During their marriage they explored many areas on central and north Vancouver Island and found Port Alice, B.C., on the northwest of the island to be their best loved village. With the mountains coming straight down into the inlet and with wilderness surrounding this picturesque area, Bill referred to this region as "God's Country". He had a great love for the sea and was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing. His "fishing holes" included areas in Alaska, British Columbia, and the San Juan Islands with prize catches being made in each area. Bill was a kind, caring person and had a big heart. He was always willing to help others, and cared deeply for his family. He will be missed by many who loved him. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Birch Bay, WA; his daughter, Donna (Ed) Bennett of Burlington, WA; his son, David (Carla) Glassman of Sedro-Woolley, WA; step-daughter, Judie (Dario) Jaeger of Mercer Island, WA and two step sons, Ed (Lauri) Martin of Oak Harbor, WA and Tom (Tara) Martin of Snohomish, WA. His several grandchildren include Katherine Glassman, Alestra Glassman, Misty King, Vicky King, Felicia Martin, Ashley Bullion, Luke Martin, Tommy Martin, London Jaeger, Milana, Jaeger, and great-granddaughter, Arrayah Harris. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 2201 H Avenue, Anacortes, Washington with a reception following. In his memory, contributions can be made to either the United Methodist Church, 2996 Main Street, Custer, WA 98240 or to the Whidbey Island Animals' Improvement Foundation, P. 0. Box 1108; Coupeville, WA 98239-1108 Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.
