John Anthony Martinis, Sr.

John Martinis, Sr. was born June 4, 1930 in Everett, WA to Pearl and Paul Martinis. John was a proud resident of Snohomish County, attending Immaculate Conception Grade School, Everett High School and Everett Junior College. John developed his love of fishing and talent for knowing where the fish were during the summers in high school when he traveled to Alaska with the Martinis fleet on his father’s fishing boats. After he started a family he bought a small sporting goods store on Broadway, now called Johns Sporting Goods, and left many fond memories in the community. Hardly a day passes in the store when an "old timer" stops in to share a memory of some fishing tip they got long ago from Big John or share some kindness John did for them many years ago.

While running the store John successfully entered politics, first as a Port of Everett Commissioner, then as 38th District Representative to the Washington State Legislature. He retired from politics in his 60's while serving Snohomish County as Deputy County Executive. He was also appointed by Congress to be chairman of the Fisheries Management Council to regulate the 200 mile fishing limit off the west coast. His specialty was Natural Resource Management and sport fisheries, and sponsored many significant pieces of legislation that positively impacted the State of Washington. He was most proud of pulling together the funding and resources to develop the 14th Street Boat Launch at the Port of Everett.

In later years he retired to his beloved Guemes Island home where he enjoyed fishing, crabbing and shrimping. Often he was the last boat to arrive at Eagle Bluff or Thatcher Pass and the first one to head home with his days limit. He had a remarkable sense for knowing where the fish were and how to "get em". He loved entertaining his family and friends at Guemes, hosting many fish dinners for anyone who stopped by.

John is survived by his five kids, Paulette (Ernie), John, Jr. (Anne), Tracy, Marty (Cheryl) and Christie; nine grandchildren, whom he was most proud of; 5 great-grandchildren whom he delighted in; and his older brother, Dr. Andrew Martinis; and his sister, Katy (Jeff) Bopp. He loved his friend Donna who was devoted to him and was with him when he passed away.

He left big shoes to fill.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 4, 2013 at Evans Funeral Chapel in Anacortes.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands. To share memories of John, please sign the online guest register at
