Florence Rosella Johnson Lowrie
Florence Rosella Johnson Lowrie was born on December 23, 1917 in Devils Lake, North Dakota on the farm where she spent her early years. She later moved to a farm in Doyon, where she worked as a maid, after quitting school in the 7th grade to help support the family. Florence married Robert in 1937 in North Dakota and later moved to Washington, eventually making their home in Anacortes. Florence became one of the first female projectionists in North Dakota, after her father-in-law fell ill. She took over and ran the movies while he was in the hospital. She also worked as a tailor for Mr. Mattis in Mount Vernon sewing men’s trousers and a photography assistant for Glen Davis at Studio San Juan. Florence and Robert owned and operated the Island Theater in the 1960’s and 70’s. Many remember Florence with her blonde hair in an updo and always in a dress and high heels at the theater. She loved the public and especially children. At Christmas they would always have a free movie for children and Santa would give out candy canes. During the week they sometimes had “Surprise Night” and no one knew what movie would be shown. After retirement, Florence and Bob spent time in Arizona with their friends and were very social. She enjoyed oil painting, needle crafts, and gardening. Florence was preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Jennie Johnson; her husband, Robert Lowrie in 2007; three sons who died at birth; her brother, Harry and three sisters, Violet, Glady, and Babe. Florence is survived by her daughter, Shirley A. Messina and her husband, Mel; grandchildren, Cindy and Doug Greenfield, Jennifer Messina, Daniel and Penni Messina, and Patricia Messina; great-grandchildren, Nichole and husband, David Talluto, John Greenfield and wife, Aleshia, Bob Greenfield, Cade Hudson and fiancée Tanya, Aaron Franulovich, Melissa Franulovich, Matthew Messina, Stephanie Messina and finance Chris Anderson, and Ryan Messina; great-great-grandchildren, Candon and Amarah Talluto, Skyler, Jayden, Riley, Tanton, Tavin Greenfield, and Taine Hudson. Florence was a member of Emblem Club, Soroptomists, and Ladies of the Elks. She loved her family and we all loved her very much. She will be missed, however, we know she is with her family that has gone on before her in Heaven with Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior.
