Melvon “Mel” Reuben McSpadden, 91, of Anacortes, Washington passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at San Juan Rehabilitation and Care Center in Anacortes. He was born on March 14, 1921 to Rush A. and Ollie E. (Jester) McSpadden in Rotan, Texas. The couple had two sets of twins, and Melvon was a twin of brother, Melton McSpadden. Mel grew up in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma and graduated from Lone Wolf High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Mel married Glenda Pearson and they had a son, Phillip Glenn McSpadden, who later passed away. Mel married Betty Watson on November 12, 1950 in Newhall, California and they have been married for 62 years. Mel was a hard worker, working six days a week and twelve hours each day – he never stopped. He enjoyed bowling and taking care of his yard. But most of all he loved helping others. Mel was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and was the lodge Master in Newhall, California. He also belonged to the Scottish Rite and the Al Malaikah Shrine. Mel was active in Job’s Daughters and was responsible for bringing back the charter to the Demolay in Newhall, CA. Mel is survived by his wife, Betty; step-daughter, Susan Lee; grandsons, Jason (Megan) Lee of Las Vegas, Alex Lee of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Dylan (Candice) Lee of Oak Harbor, WA; four great-grandsons; and his sister, Thelma Smith, who was also a twin. A Masonic graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon, Saturday, February 23, 2103 at Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes, followed by a memorial service and reception at 2:00 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Anacortes.
