Ann Roberta Hastings, beloved mother, wife, and friend, was born on April 11, 1942, in Denver, Colorado, to Robert Arthur Mantell and Ruby Gloria Wamsley. She passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026, with her daughters by her side.

Ann spent her early years in the Seattle area after her family relocated there, forming cherished memories that stayed with her throughout her life. She later moved to San Diego, joining her mother and sister, Jeanne.

At Christmastime in 1965, Ann met her future husband, Neil "Red" Hastings, on a blind date—an unexpected meeting that would shape the rest of her life. The two were married on March 6, 1966, in San Diego. Red adopted Ann's children, Mark and Carla, raising them as his own. Their daughter, Vicky, was born a few years later.

Ann embraced the life of a Navy wife. She agreed to follow Red wherever the U.S. Navy assigned him, with the shared understanding that when he retired, he would bring her home to Washington state. Together, they built a life across the country and beyond, living in San Diego, California; Trenton, New Jersey; Washington, D.C.; and Honolulu, Hawai'i. When Red retired from the Navy in 1983, they honored their promise and returned to the Pacific Northwest, first settling in Sedro‑Woolley before making their home in Anacortes, Washington.

Ann was gifted in many creative pursuits. A fantastic cook, seamstress, and quilter, she poured love and artistry into everything she made. For many years, she created and decorated beautiful wedding cakes for family and friends - each one crafted with meticulous care. Her passion for quilting led her to become an active member of local quilt guilds, including Fidalgo Island Quilters, where she found both community and joy. She treasured the many quilt retreats she attended with her friends.

When her children were grown, she began working at PSE's Baker Lake Lodge where she managed hospitality for corporate events. Later, she joined The Quilt Shop in Stanwood, Washington, eventually moving with the shop when it relocated to Anacortes. In these roles, Ann became a mentor to countless new and experienced quilters, sharing her deep knowledge and gentle encouragement. Over time, she developed a special expertise in quilts of the 1920s and '30s - their history, materials, and conservation - becoming a trusted resource for anyone seeking to understand or preserve these treasured pieces of Americana.

Ann is survived by her children, Mark Hastings, Carla (Tom) Bigelow, and Victoria Hastings; and by her nieces April Nichols, Debbie Axtell, Patty (Kelly) Simpson, Katherine (Karl) Schmidt, and Elaina Diamond. She is also survived by her grandchildren—Jonah, Tabitha, Chantel, Tara, Gavin, Gabriela, and Jadin—and her great‑grandchildren Joanna Beth, Jensen, Alan, Freya, Giovanni, Hazel, and Tristan. Great‑nieces and great-nephews Martin, Katalina, Darren, and Amariah also carry her memory forward.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Red Hastings; her parents Ruby Troxel, Robert Troxel, and Robert Mantell; her brother Ralph "Bud" Mantell; her sisters Barbara Hawkins, Wanda Wood, Mildred Smiley, Frances Mantell, and Jeanne Diamond; and her nephew Noel Diamond.

A graveside service for family and close friends will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 9:00 AM at Grandview Cemetery in Anacortes, Washington.

Ann will be remembered for her kindness, her resilience, and the deep love she held for her family. Her presence brought warmth and comfort to all who knew her, and her memory will continue to be a source of strength and inspiration.
