Born March 14, 1955, to Cal and Sheila Hamstra in West Seattle. Passed away August 7, 2022, at his home in Friday Harbor, Washington.

Cap'n Jack grew up on Vashon Island. Following in the footsteps of his father, Cap'n Cal Hamstra, he began a career with Washington State Ferries at the age of 16. After a lengthy career spanning 49 years, Cap'n Jack was always most proud to say, "I never sank a single boat".

On September 8, 1986, he married the love of his life, Dolly Lawson, and gained a daughter, Alexandra (Rusty) Argall. The following year on March 12, 1987, they welcomed a son, John B. Hamstra Jr. (JB).

Cap'n Jack had a love and passion for Willy's Jeeps and had accrued quite a collection throughout his lifetime. One of his favorites being a 1956 Willys Jeepster convertible passed down from his dad Cal.

Jack was always known for his big smile and upbeat personality. In his free time it was always hard to tell what he was better at, catching fresh Dungeness Crab or telling great stories...sometimes both at the same time.

Cap'n Jack was preceded in death by his folks Cal and Sheila Hamstra. He is survived by his son John B. "JB" Hamstra Jr. (Jaime and family), daughter Alexandra "Rusty" Argall, forever love Dolly Lawson, sisters Judi (Joe) Rehm, Sue (Roy) Fuller, niece Alyson Rehm and nephew Jesse Fuller, along with countless friends and coworkers.

Please join Cap'n Jack's family for a Celebration of his Life on Saturday September 17, 2022, at the Friday Harbor American Legion from 12pm to 4pm. Jack always said he never wanted a service when he passed, but definitely a fun get-together to share some great stories was a must.
