On the morning of Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 8:00 AM, Carl Frederick Berner went home to be with the LORD.  He was 85.  Karen was at his side and experienced profound peace transcending them.  As Carl took his last breath, Esther, his faithful Bernese Mountain Dog, sleeping at the floor by his side, lifted her head, cocked her ears, looked at the ceiling, and he was gone.  Looking back, we can see how God was there every moment.  Carl peacefully went into His Father's arms as he breathed his last on this earth.

Carl was born on April 8, 1935 in Chicago, IL to Louis and Martha Berner.  To the end, Carl was a devoted son who honored his mother and father all his life.

Carl graduated from Cornell University in 1957.  He earned his medical degree from University of Maryland in 1961.  He went on to the University of Washington from 1961 to 1963 and the University of Maryland from 1963-1966 to receive his training in General Surgery.  Carl served as Chief of Surgery in the U.S. Army Hospital, West Berlin, Germany 1966-1969.  From 1969-1971 he specialized in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Michigan.

Carl settled on Lake Sammamish in Bellevue, WA in 1971 where he raised his family and  practiced medicine until he retired in 2004.  Carl was involved in many medical societies and held various offices throughout his career.  He also gave of his time to medical missions performing cleft lip and palate surgeries for those in need.  He was passionate about praying for healing.  Carl believed that as a physician he worked for the "Great Physician" as "His assistant" and was comfortable stating it publicly.  He was a universally beloved surgeon, admired and respected by his patients, staff and colleagues alike.

Carl was a lover of Israel, and over the years invested much of his time and resources there, recognizing the miracle of its birth as a nation and ongoing advancements.  It was one of his greatest joys to explore the Land and connect with its people.

Carl loved life!  He loved his family and lived to help others.  Carl was known for his big heart and generous, kind spirit.  He worked with his church to  increase awareness of those who were oppressed and persecuted worldwide for their religious beliefs.

Carl had a great love for gardening.  He was always passionate about what the earth could produce and spent every available moment tending his plants and flowers creating amazing organic beauty.  He valued quality, be it food, art or music and took great pleasure in supporting local 'mom and pop' businesses and individual artisans.

He was married to Rosemary Davis Berner from 1957 to 1988 and wed Karen Nichols in 1989.  Carl is survived by his wife, Karen, his former spouse, Rosemary and their four children: Ann, Louis, Amy and Sarah along with their spouses; and Karen's children: David and Dawn and their spouses; by his sisters: Sally and Sue and their spouses and his sister-in-law, Barbara along with a host of nieces and nephews. Carl was also blessed with thirteen grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Louis.

There will be a private family Graveside Service with Military Honors for Carl on Monday, November 9, 2020 in Anacortes, WA.
