Dick Smock's life ended peacefully at the age of 91, with his family by his side. Dick was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Harold Greenwood and Betty Irene (Batesole) Smock, and brother Robert B. Smock. The family moved to Detroit, MI where Dick graduated high school.

In 1944 he enlisted in the Navy, which brought him to Naval Air Station Whidbey in Washington State. While playing ping-pong in the lobby of UW's Methodist Women's dormitory, he met the love of his life, Laura Mae Langdon from Arlington, WA. They married on Valentine's Day and raised their 3 daughters, Linda, Barbara and Ann, in the Midwest.

After the war, Dick and Laura ran a gas station and general store in Six Lakes, MI. Dick then attended Stout College in Menomonee, WI. He taught auto mechanics and metal and wood working in Chicago, and then in Jackson, MI where he, being an excellent carpenter, built a house for his family. In Jackson they met Richard and Mima Spencer and Perry and Dottie Ragouzis, and the families became life-long friends.

While working as a high school counselor in Park Forest, IL he earned his master's degree from the University of Chicago. In 1967 Dick became a professor in the field of Education at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. At the age of 50 he received his PhD in Education Psychology while in Brighton, England, and went on to teach and work in South Africa and India.

After a long career in teaching, counseling and mentoring undergraduates, graduate students, exchange students from around the world, and most of his daughters' friends, Dick retired to Anacortes, WA in 1987. He and Laura spent 7 years living aboard their 33' sailboat 'Home' until moving to their current residence. With daughter Linda and her husband John they traveled the world and sailed the Inside Passage to Alaska several times. He loved getting to know his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he felt so fortunate to have been close to all of them. He loved to read, work in his woodshop, travel, and sail from the San Juan Islands to Alaska. He was an active member of the Anacortes Yacht Club. He also played harmonica and ukulele. He was a long-time member of the Anacortes Senior Ukulele Ensemble but especially enjoyed family gatherings which included a jam session.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law Floyd and Anna Langdon of Arlington, his brother Robert Smock, niece Sarabeth and nephew David.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Laura; daughters: Linda Swanson Seely and her husband John Seely of Lake Bluff, IL; Barbara Schwulst and her husband Paul Schwulst of Anacortes; and Ann Smock of Burlington, WA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Paul Seely (Sofia) of Libertyville, IL; Valerie Seely of Ballard, WA; Cathy Nolan (Cris) of Lake Bluff, , IL; Eric Schwulst (Debra) of Anacortes; Heidi Culver (Aaron) of Issaquah, WA; Anna Taylor (Nick) of Seattle; Cassady Norris of Anacortes; Fae Norris of LA, CA and Evelyn Osborn of LA, CA. He is also survived by 13 great grandchildren.

Additionally, he will be missed by Sue Marx Smock of WA DC, Mardi Smock Black and Jim Ristine of Suttons Bay, MI, John Smock and Caroline Hwang of New York, Adam Smock of Troy, MI, Jacob and Sylvia Smock of Jacksonville, FL, Darcie Morris and Ron Wohl, of Anacortes, Sundee Morris and Crispin Wilhelm of Everett, Haidee Morris of Boston, MA, Randy and Karen Morris of Florida, Floyd and Leta Langdon of Arlington, Lon and Sandy Langdon of Arlington, WA, Deedee Langdon and family of Stanwood, WA, Donald and Sylvia Langdon of Spanish Fork, UT, Teresa Langdon and Hector Bracero of Marysville, WA, Michelle and Tyler Alderson of Edmonds, WA, Candi Holland of Everett, WA, Janet and Jason Popelka and all of the extended Schwulst families, the Spencer families, the Ragouzis families, Mary and Joe Gleason, Barbara Larson, Helene and Maury Fink, Mildred Bushey, and more relatives and friends too numerous to name but equally cherished. A graveside urn committal with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on September 22, 2018, at Fernhill Cemetery, Anacortes, WA.
