Donald Irving, 93, of Anacortes, died peacefully in his sleep, at his residence, on Saturday, September 4, 2021, of natural causes.
Don was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 25, 1927, to Edward Victor and Petra Louise (Bemister) Irving. The family moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1929. He graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1945 then joined the Navy. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Sangay, which was an ammunition ship during WWII. Soon after his honorable discharge, Don returned to Los Angeles and met Marion Elizabeth Ayer. They were married on September 3, 1949. Don and Marion eventually settled in Santa Barbara, CA where he worked in various industries before entering his favorite profession: that of an Avocado rancher.
In 1989 Don and Marion retired to Anacortes. Don spent many years volunteering for Meals-on-Wheels and at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul where he was also an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Don enjoyed several hobbies including traveling the world, golfing, and photography. Don will be remembered as an avid Chicago Cubs fan, an astute bridge player and a loyal friend to many.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Brian. He is survived by Marion, his wife of 72 years; sister Virginia; 3 sons Jim (Polly), Scott (Robin), and Robert (Patrice); 7 grandchildren: Andrew, Leah (Bowen), Luke (Natalie), Timothy, Allison, Matthew (Brenna), and Maggie and 2 great grandchildren Bowen and Stella.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anacortes with a reception to follow. Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Grandview Cemetery. All are welcome to attend.
