Doris Ensley
Matteson
Jul 15, 1929 — Sep 19, 2022
Anacortes
Doris E. Ensley Matteson, 93, native of Anacortes; a daughter, soulmate, mother, caterer for farm crew, artist, real-estate investor and provider for her family, left all to be with her Lord and Savior when He came a calling for her on September 19, 2022.
Doris was born on July 15, 1929, the daughter of Clarence and Alma (Smith) Palmgren. Her father was a fisherman and boatbuilder. She enjoyed helping him with his endeavors and through the process acquired the ability to be resourceful and resilient in times of hardship
After graduating from High School, Doris went to stay with her Aunt Ginny and Uncle Carl in Eastern Washington. It was while she was there, she met Aunty Ginny's brother, Jack Ensley. They were married for 21 years. Three children were born to them: Kathy, Mike and Susan. While raising her family with Jack, she discovered her artistic ability in creating cement sculptures to adorn her garden. She created beautiful designs for family and friends only, however making an exception for the Whitman County Fair which featured a live cow painted in pink as their mascot. Doris took pity on the cow and created a permanent inanimate mascot in pink for their Fair.
When the oldest two children left home, Doris returned to Anacortes as a single mother with her youngest daughter to rebuild her life again. She built her home and invested in real estate and also flourishing in her artwork. In 1979, Doris married Alvin Matteson, a single dad and they blended their families. Together Alvin and Doris had many fantastic adventures together.
Doris is predeceased by her parents; and her sister and brother-in-law, Frances (Joe Morgan). She is survived by her husband, Alvin and her three children and their spouses: Kathy (Carl), Mike (Cathy) Susan (Gary); grandchildren: Dustin, Maryann, Jeremy, Rosanna and Jens; great grandchildren: Lance, Felicia, Nathan, Trenton, Miya and Ian; several Stepchildren, step-grandchildren and step great grandchildren. She is dearly missed by her family and friends.
