Dorothy Irene Powell, passed away peacefully January 6, 2022, surrounded by family. She had lived over 100 years.   

   Dorothy was born at Camp Sherman, an army camp in Ohio, to Joseph and Fannie (Harmon) Keransy on June 5, 1921. She had an older sister, Margaret, who was 7 when Dorothy joined the family. She lived most of her youth in St. Louis, New Orleans, and Kansas City, before moving to Los Angeles in 1937. Dorothy's father died when she was just 16, a few months after they moved to Los Angeles.   

   In the 11  ^th  grade, Dorothy met Dorothy Rothermund, and they became lifelong friends.  After high school, Dorothy studied at the Metropolitan School of Business, graduating in May 1940. Her first job was at Powell Manufacturing Company as bookkeeper. The Powell brothers, Hayward and Channing, manufactured a popular line of motor scooters. Dorothy started dating Hayward, they fell in love, and married in September 1945.   

   During the 1940s, Dorothy took up photography. After some of her photos were published in the Herald American newspaper, they offered to pay Dorothy to work as photographer for their Home and Garden magazine. She did this for several years, while continuing as bookkeeper (and photographer) for Powell Manufacturing.   

   Dorothy and Hayward raised three children, Linda, Alan, and Brad, in Lynwood, California. Dorothy volunteered as treasurer for the PTA and Compton-Pacific Little League. She was a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout and Brownie mom, and was active in church and other volunteer activities. In 1975, Hayward and Dorothy moved to a ranch home they built in southern Utah. Unfortunately, Hayward died in early 1978. A few months later, Dorothy, having a lifelong love of drawing, took an art class at the local community college which blossomed into a love of painting. Dorothy's paintings won several awards, including a "best of show" at the county-wide art show.   

   In 1987, Dorothy returned to Southern California to be near family. She took classes in art, photography and computers, and continued painting.   

   In 1995, Dorothy moved to Washington State to be with her family and grandchildren. She had a deep faith in God and became active in and joined First Baptist Church of Anacortes. Combining her computer and photography skills, she began selling her art locally on greeting cards. Dorothy was active in Artists Northwest, an association of local artists, serving as both secretary and president over the years. In 2011, they presented Dorothy with a lifetime honorary membership. Dorothy painted around 400 oil and watercolors, including several "Candlelight Guitarist" CD covers for her son Brad.   

   Dorothy lived a long and wonderful life, sharing her positive spirit with everyone she knew and met. She was greatly loved, and will be forever missed, never forgotten.   

   Dorothy is survived by her three children, Linda (Al Tyrrill), Alan (Jean) Powell, Brad Powell; 4 grandchildren, Jeff Tyrrill, Alisa Tyrrill, Courtney (Josh Remmenga), Erickson Powell; 2 step-grandchildren, Ed (Elisa) Tyrrill, Steve Tyrrill; 4 great grandchildren, 2 step-great grandchildren and numerous other relatives.   

   A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church of Anacortes on August 20, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. with a reception following.
