Galen Edward Tyler, 78, of La Conner, Washington passed away on April 20, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Galen was born on June 15, 1944 in Portland, Oregon to Oscar and Irene Tyler. He was educated in Portland, attending Franklin High School. He grew up in the family business and became co-owner of Mt. Scott Fuel Company after serving in the U.S. Army as First Lieutenant and later in the National Guard.

He was very active in the Portland community as a philanthropist to many organizations including Meadow Wood Speech Camp for kids, Mt. Hood Community College, Mt. Hood Medical Birthing Center and was always willing to help fundraise for local grade and high schools. He served as a past Exalted Ruler of the Gateway Elks in Portland.

He had a love for adventure and the outdoors; enjoying skiing, tennis, boating, fishing and hunting. We all benefited from his fabulous culinary skills as well. He loved traveling with his wife, Sherri, children, family and friends on many adventures at sea including Alaska, the San Juan Islands, the Caribbean and the South Pacific were just some as well as experiencing Europe. He also enjoyed coaching the kids in soccer and basketball and spending time teaching them skiing, boating, fishing and how to fix anything. This carried over to his beloved grandchildren attending their sports, dance and school activities. One of his favorite things to do was teach them all how to go crabbing.

After over thirty years with his family business he decided to leave it to pursue his passion further north in The San Juans Islands and Anacortes area forming his new business, Captains Marine Inc . Galen used his credentials as a US Coast Guard Merchant Marine Officer, Captain, Certified instructor for power and sail to establish his new career. He earned the reputation as the 'Go to Guy' in the nautical world. He was a Marine Instructor, Surveyor, Yacht finder and most loved being a Delivery Captain up and down the Pacific Ocean, along the West Coast of the United States and Mexico.

He is survived by his wife, Sherrill, daughter Heidi (Mike Ortiz), sons: Dr. Brian (Amy) Artman; Aaron (Leslie) Artman; grandchildren: Austin, Jack, Summer, Elle, Duke, Hannah, Rhys, Brooks, Winnie and Cal; his brother Terry along with several nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

A Celebration of Galen's Life will be held on May 20 ^th at 1 p.m. at Cheney Stadium, Home of the Tacoma Rainiers Professional Baseball Team.
