Irvin Leonard
Mortenson, Jr.
Sep 12, 1941 — Oct 27, 2018
Sequim
Irvin Leonard Mortenson, Jr. (Irv) 77, passed away in Anacortes, WA on October, 27th, 2018. Irv was born September 12, 1941 to Irvin Sr. and Berneda in Wyoming.
Irv had a long career working in the National Park Service as a Park Service Ranger and Superintendent. He served at Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona, and Badlands National Park in South Dakota. During his time in the National Park Services, he taught thousands of people how to love and respect the land and how important conservation and protection of our natural resources is for future generations. Irv was part of many discoveries on public lands, including the Dinosaurs of The Badlands.
Irv was also an avid badge and medal collector and began his collection through researching medals to the King's Royal Rifle Corps in the early 80s and it grew from there. He was a regimental specialist and was the go to man for information and was always willing to help a fellow collector with his library and database to figure out what some found treasure was, precisely. He wrote many articles on soldiers' rifles, campaigns, regimental personalities, medals, and badges.
He retired to Sequim, WA where he became a Real Estate agent and enjoying the Olympic Peninsula with his dog, Molly.
Irv is preceded in death by Kay B. Mortenson, his wife and best friend whom he adored. Irv will be missed by his only son, Brian, and grandson, Nathan.
