Jack Wuebker died on November 15, 2020 at home after a brief illness.  He was 81.  A resident of Friday Harbor for 42 years, Jack was born on May 12, 1939 to Bing and Kae Wuebker and was the eldest of six children.  Jack grew up in Ogden, Utah and moved to New York City at the age of 19, where he married Margaret Hay.  They had two children, Monique and Mardette.  Jack later married Cheryl Wollett and they had one child, Cody.  His third and final wife was Carla J. Higginson, to whom he was married for 27 years and with whom he remained close after their divorce.

Jack spent several decades in New York City as a systems analyst for a large publishing company, working on IBM mainframe computers.  He then moved to Friday Harbor and became a journeyman electrician, doing both residential and commercial work.  His passion was flyfishing and for many years he drove up the Al-Can Highway by himself to Alaska, stopping at streams in BC, the Yukon Territory, and Alaska to fish for salmon on a fly rod.  He was a firm believer in catch and release.   Jack also enjoyed traveling and once rode a motorcycle across the country as a young man.  He liked to cook and he followed politics closely his entire life.  Jack and Carla owned a total of five potbelly pigs over the years, and they were very important to him.    Jack joked prior to his death that his headstone should read, "He did what he wanted and had a good time," though he then added with a smile, "not always with the best sense." He could tell stories that made even a commonplace incident interesting and amusing.  He had an upbeat attitude even during the past three years when he was going through cancer treatment that left him unable to eat or drink anything by mouth and caused speech difficulties.  Jack will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jerry, and his sister Patrice.  He is survived by his daughters Monique Lanjewar and Mardette Guerin, both of North Carolina, his son Cody Wuebker of Friday Harbor, his brothers Mike Wuebker of Hailey, Idaho, his sisters Kit Hatch and Janet Sturdivant of Ogden, Utah, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A good old-fashioned wake will be planned at the American Legion when gatherings are again possible.  Memorial donations may be made to Pigs Peace Sanctuary, P.O. Box 295, Stanwood, WA 98292.
