Joanie Lutfiyah Mills, 65, a beloved mother, teacher, and longtime resident of Anacortes, Washington, passed away, November 26, 2025, after a life defined by generosity, resilience, and joy. Born on January 7, 1960, in Lafayette, New Jersey, Joanie was the daughter of Adnan and Ruth (Peterson) Al Ameen.

Her early years along the Jersey Shore shaped her love for the outdoors - she spent her youth surfing, lifeguarding, and embracing the rhythm of coastal life.

Joanie earned her bachelor's degree in education and went on to dedicate her career to serving students as a Special Education teacher in the Anacortes School District. Her compassion, patience, and unwavering belief in every child's potential made her a cherished presence in the school community. Whether she was known as the "Recess Mom" or the unexpectedly fun "Detention Leader," Joanie had a gift for making children feel seen, valued, and understood. Troubled students gravitated toward her warmth; she had a way of turning even detention into a place of encouragement and second chances.

As a single mother, Joanie raised her children - Micah, Alysse, and Joni - with boundless love, creativity, and grit. She met life's challenges with positivity and light, always finding ways to make ordinary days memorable. She welcomed not only her own children but also the neighborhood kids into her orbit, taking them biking, hiking, and out for soft-serve at McDonald's. To many, she was affectionately known as the "neighborhood mom."

Joanie passed her love of outdoor adventure to her children and, later, to her grandchildren. Summers were filled with swimming lessons, fishing trips, and crabbing along the shore. She was also a devoted Seattle Seahawks fan, cheering passionately through every season.

Joanie's legacy is one of kindness, inclusion, and joyful presence. She created community wherever she went, offering encouragement, laughter, and a sense of belonging to all who crossed her path.

Joanie is predeceased by her parents: Ruth and Adnan Al Ameen. She is survived by her children - Micah, Alysse, and Joni, grandchildren, Trenton, Paxton and Prishan, by her sister Peri Steffenhagen, and by the many students, friends, and neighbors whose lives she touched with her generous spirit.
