Kenneth Herbert Smith (Herb), of Guemes Island, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Nov 17th, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Herb was born July 19, 1943, to Edward and Ann Smith.  He resided in the Burlington area most of his life and graduated from BEHS in 1961.  In 1977 he married Sally and together they shared a joyous blended family with 5 children.

Herb grew up with the farming spirit deep in his blood and many of his first jobs were along this vein. He eventually owned and operated a Phillips 66 Station in Burlington and ended his professional career as a Burlington Firefighter. He retired in 2008, deeply cherishing the relationships he made with his firefighter brothers and sisters.

Herb's passions included his dogs, running, camping, boating, fishing, gardening, farming, and listening to other people's stories. He was likely best known for continually bringing raucous laughter to the table, most often ending with a naughty, but oh so him, remark. Humor fulfilled him.

Family was extremely important to Herb and good friends were always considered family.  He was a dedicated and devoted son, brother, dad, grandpa and husband.  His kind, caring and genuine nature, resulted in him being a father figure and role model to many. He was truly the heartbeat of his family.

He is survived by his wife Sally, at their home on Guemes Island, children and their spouses: Kristi (Perry Thompson), Wendy (Roy Fuik), Ed (Sandy) Smith, Stephanie (Brian Harper), Amy (Andy Colton); brothers: Allen (Judy), Tim (Judith), and Tom (Dawn) Smith; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; cousins and many dear friends.  He'll be incredibly missed by all who were fortunate to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Patrick.
