On March 20, 2026, Lamont Wayne (Corkey) North went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ in whom he believed for eternal salvation.

He was born September 23, 1931, in Deer Harbor, WA, to Averill and Chet North.

Corkey was a man who pursued his interests with great focus and energy.  As an only child, his playground was most often in and around the waters surrounding Deer Harbor.  He was venturing about in his own skiff at the age when most kids were learning to ride bikes.  He was a natural for his 4 years of Navy service as an engineer aboard the LSMR 412 and then the Henrico (1953-54) during the Korean war and is a decorated veteran.

For a few years he worked with his father, Chet North, building boats at their Deer Harbor boat shop.  Later he owned and operated freight service in the San Juans on his vessel the Nordland.  In the early '80s, he served four years as the Chief Engineer of the M/V Western Pioneer in the Alaskan fishing industry.

He also had a passion for airplanes.  After moving his young family to Waldron Island in the early '60s, he bought a plane and learned to fly, first utilizing Middlestat's landing strip and soon after building his own landing strip on the Waldron property.  On many occasions during that period, he provided emergency transportation to neighbors in need of off-island medical service.

He continued his love of flying throughout his life, for many years flying his Stimpson around the Puget Sound, attending fly-ins and air shows.  He attended Clover Park Technical College in Tacoma and earned his airframe mechanic degree.

Throughout a busy and diverse career, Corkey owned and operated many businesses on Orcas Island and elsewhere including Orcas Lumber, a service station in Gig Harbor, WA and a great host of other ventures.

Upon retiring, Corkey focused on writing primarily to preserve and honor those men he served with in the Navy.  He labored years over this work and truly produced a touching and beautifully written, first-hand account of those shared experiences.

The events and pursuits of such a life of adventure and accomplishments cannot be captured on one page but these memories and so many others will be treasured and shared again and again by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Eva May (Haydter) North, two sons, Lawrence Allen and Chester Brian and his daughter Teresa Anne North his grandchildren as well as stepdaughters Heidi (Stovner) Kruse and Tammany (Stovner) Whitlock and their families.
