Marie Edith
Parnell
Apr 12, 1923 — Oct 22, 2021
Anacortes
With both sadness and relief that she is no longer suffering, we share that Marie Edith (Nichols) Parnell passed away peacefully October 22, 2021, in Anacortes Washington. Marie was born on April 12, 1923, to Amasa Oscar Nichols (Nick) and Hazel Matilida Stevenson in Moffat County, Colorado.
Marie took great pride in her gardens, full of flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed sharing glorious displays of flowers at weekly church services where she was a long-time member at the Onalaska Presbyterian Church. Marie moved to the area in 1935 in what she would say was her first motorhome, a canvas covered ford truck with room for a washing machine and 7 siblings. Her other two siblings were born locally, making Marie the oldest of ten children to her parents.
After graduation, she resided in Seattle, where she worked as a "Rosie-the-Riveter" for Boeing. She married James Westley Parnell in 1943. They had 2 children, Cary Allen and Carl Dean. Marie worked at Fullers Bakery for many years, decorating marvelous cakes, as she often did for the community on the side as well! In 1957, Marie was titled Mrs. Lewis County. She enjoyed many PNW activities including camping, hiking, fishing, clam-digging. Her indoor interests were sewing, square dance skirts to join her friends at dances, crocheting, leatherwork, beaded jewelry, and canning vegetables.
Marie is survived by five of her siblings, Clyde, Pearl, Irene, Melvin & Pleaides (Nick); four grandchildren; five great grandchildren;three great, great grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, James in 2002, and two children, Carl Dean in 2016 and Cary Allen in 2020.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life gathering for Marie on Saturday November 20, 2021, at the Onalaska Presbyterian Church, located at 288 Carlisle Ave Onalaska WA 98570. There will be potluck refreshments after the service. The family would like you to bring your favorite flower, if possible, to create a remembrance of Marie. There will be vases to place the flowers in which the family will take to Shoestring Cemetery afterwards where Marie will be interred next to her husband, James, son, Carl and daughter in law, Leslie.
