Nancy Scagliotti was born on April 8, 1948. "Four-eight, four-eight," she would delightedly say to anyone who asked. She grew up on a ranch in Hollister, California, surrounded by apricot orchards and the love of her large extended family.

Nancy pursued her education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco State University, where she earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Yet, more than the degrees, she cherished the lifelong friendships she built during those years.

She married Rick Alway, and together they embarked on a journey to the Pacific Northwest, drawn by its rugged beauty. They ranched sheep farms in rural Whatcom and Snohomish counties, where they raised their three daughters—Susanna, Abby, and Sara. Nancy's career as a teacher in elementary and middle schools reflected her passion for language. She inspired her students to discover their voices through poetry and creative writing. Along the way, Nancy gathered an incredible circle of friends who remained close, even after she retired.

Nancy later married Mark Vorobik, beginning a new chapter of her life filled with roses, poetry, and travel. She moved to Edison, Washington, where she embraced a new extended family, including Mark's children—Remi, Kito, and Yetta. She found profound joy in the land they called home, often paddling on the Samish River, walking the dike with her dogs, or hosting gatherings to share the beauty of the place she loved.

Who Nancy Was:
More than her life's milestones, Nancy was the glue that held her extended family together. She found her greatest joy in bringing happiness to others - whether as a devoted friend, a thoughtful gift-giver, or a patient listener. She celebrated life's simple pleasures and big moments alike: Christmas songs, family meals, cocktails, paddle boarding, British crime dramas, campfires, and road trips. She loved the color purple, Vancouver Island, Guatemala, her eagle tree, fresh bread, strong coffee, whipped cream, and supporting small businesses. She cherished late-night conversations, poetry, art, and games with her grandchildren.

Nancy's spirit was one with the natural world. She is the cool wind across Samish Bay, the fields of spring tulips, and the flocks of snow geese flying west. She is the artichokes in her garden—resilient and beautiful, blooming into bursts of purple. Her presence was warmth itself, a light that will continue to glow in the hearts of all who knew her.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband, Mark Vorobik; her children, Susanna Alway, Abby Alway, Sara Rosenstock, Remi Vorobik, Kito Vorobik, and Yetta Vorobik; her sons-in-law, Andrew Holmberg, Mike Soliwoda, Bobby Rosenstock, and Chad Yakobson; and her grandchildren, Aidan Franklin, Freya Holmberg-Vorobik, Elle Rosenstock, Nico Alway, Cas Holmberg-Vorobik, Terje Vorobik-Yakobson, Bayla Rosenstock, and Bjørn Vorobik-Yakobson. Her absence will be deeply felt by countless others whose lives she touched.

Celebration of Life
A celebration of Nancy's remarkable life will be held at her beloved home on August 2, 2025.
