Norman Harry Johnston, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 29, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born on August 26, 1938, in Anacortes, Washington, to Harry and Pearl Johnston, and was the eldest of five siblings: Lorraine, Shirley, Sharon, and Les.

Norm spent his early years on Fidalgo Island surrounded by family and friends. After marrying Lou Ann Lux on October 14, 1957, Norm and Lou started their family. In 1961, recognizing the need to provide for his growing household, Norm left the island to seek work opportunities.

The couple settled in Kent, and later in Ravensdale, Washington, where Norm built a career as an equipment operator, joining the 302 Operating Engineers Union. He later founded All Star Excavating, a company known for his personal motto, "A man is no better than his word." Norm's dedication to his craft earned him a reputation for reliability and integrity.

In 1994, Norm and Lou returned to Fidalgo Island to retire and fulfill their dream of building a log cabin on the very land where Norm was born—a place he had always yearned to return to.

Preceded in death by his son Ron, Norm is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lou Ann; their three children, Don (wife, Ulyana), Kim (husband, Bill), and Cindy (husband, Brett); as well as 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Norm found joy in family, friends, operating heavy equipment, ham radio, and celebrating holidays and special events. Reflecting on the challenges he faced, he often said, "Well, it all turned out for the best." Norm had a unique ability to leave a lasting impression on everyone he met. He is now at peace with the Lord.
