Paul Eugene Monohon, age 79, passed away September 23, 2024 in his home in Anacortes. He is preceded in death by his parents Orton and Lilly, and sister, Patricia. Paul leaves behind his good friends who will miss swimming with him at the Fidalgo Pool, lunches at the Anacortes Senior Center, evening walks to the Guemes Island Ferry, and barbeques in La Connor.

Paul grew up in Seattle and swam in his senior year at Bellevue where he was the high school Swimming State Champion in the Butterfly event. He swam collegiately at the University of Iowa. After graduating, with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Paul joined the Peace Corps and lived in Africa. After his time in the Peace Corps, he traveled to many exotic places including SE Asia, India, Nepal, and Brazil. He loved to travel off the beaten path and live locally.

Paul worked as a Professional Land Surveyor in Alaska where he built a cabin and enjoyed life in the remote Alaskan wilderness. After leaving Alaska, he worked in the North Cascades, where the job required him to camp all summer. Paul's next job took him to Anacortes where he worked for Schlemmer Engineering Inc. His stamp can be seen on many recorded surveys in town.

Paul was involved in his community. He rode with the Auxiliary Patrol, he volunteered at the Arts Festival each year, as well as many other local events. He loved the town of Anacortes, and he loved the outdoors and introduced many of us to unknown trails and special places. He taught us to look around and savor the scenery around us. Paul would often say "All movement is good."—with his characteristic smile. Words to live by-- as he truly did.

One outstanding character trait of Paul as a young man was, he seemed to always be the initiator of various adventures. These included road trips to swim meets in distant cities, trips to the Pacific Ocean, overnight and extended backpacking, group building of multiple kayaks, biking trips, and more. Paul was never one for traditional partying or nightlife, but definitely had a strong attachment to nature and exercise. Even though he could have used his Chemical Engineering degree to land a lucrative Engineering career, he valued the adventures and physical challenges of the Peace Corps, the Alaska Pipeline, and surveying. Paul was a rare and unique individual.

A Celebration of Life for Paul will be held at the Anacortes Senior Center at 1701 22nd St, Anacortes, WA on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. Dress Code: Casual.
