Born on St Patrick's Day, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas; Alan "Raney" Hanks was the youngest of three children and the only son of Howard and Lorene Hanks. When he was 13, the family moved to Haddon Heights, New Jersey for his dad's occupation with Texaco Oil Refinery.

He enlisted  in the US Air Force in January 1955 and served as an aircraft mechanic, with tours in Tripoli, Libya and Oregon. He earned the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal while in the service.

He met his future wife, Dona, in Oregon.  They were married in January 1958. They had a daughter, Wendy. After his enlistment ended in December 1958, they moved to Anacortes where he worked for Texaco. They had two sons, William and Michael.

Raney worked at OK Tire in Anacortes and then managed the Les Schwab Tire Center in Bellingham, WA for 25 years until he retired in March of 1998.

Raney experienced much tragedy in his life. His mother was sent to a sanatorium for TB for several years when he was young. She passed in 1983 and his Dad in 1989. He lost his daughter, Wendy, in 1998; his wife, Dona in 2002; his sister, Gayle in 2009; and his son, Michael in 2012.

Raney loved to work on motorcycles, cars and trucks. He enjoyed camping and travel with his family. He was an active member of the Anacortes Elks Club and the American Legion. In his later years, one of his favorite activities was winning at the pull tabs at the Elks Club with his friend Milt Woods. He liked Westerns, Baseball and pretty girls, not necessarily in that order. He loved animals, especially his dogs and cats, of which there  were many.

Buried with him are his cats, Waldo and KeeKee, and his dog, Evan. They were preceded in death by Burt, Rufus, Jake, Belle, Kiwi, Jackson, Tux and probably more than we can remember.

He is survived by his grandson, Christopher Michael Hanks; his sister, Ardeth and her family; and his nephew, David Gilliland  and his family.
