On Sunday, May 16, Hendricka "Ricky" Beets passed away at the age of 87.

Ricky was born on July 24,1933, at home, in the town of Mabton, WA, to Arie and Dirksje Vander Hoogt. She graduated from Granger High School and attended St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Yakima.

In 1952, she met Norman Beets on a blind date set up by mutual friends. They married on February 8, 1953, and went on to raise four children and share 68 years together.

In 1958, Ricky and Norman moved to the tiny island town of Anacortes to begin a new adventure with their young family. Ricky quickly immersed herself in the community; she was a longtime member of Beta Sigma Phi, her church, and the Fidalgo Pool. She was always volunteering at her children's schools, and for several years headed the annual Campfire Girls' candy sales.

Ricky spent her final days surrounded by friends and family. She still managed to make it to the bi-weekly coffee meetups with her "Pool Pals." Ricky passed peacefully at her home in Anacortes.

She was preceded in death by her children Karen and Steve. She is survived by her husband, Norman, children Kathy and Scott, and grandchildren, Brianne, Travis and Carlie.
