Robert Laverne
Mccomas
Jul 25, 1923 — Jun 23, 2021
Robert Laverne (Bob) McComas, 97, of Anacortes, WA passed away on Wednesday June 23, 2021 in Mount Vernon, Washington, a few days after a fall. His life ended the way he hoped for, peacefully in his sleep. Bob was born on July 25, 1923 in Bellingham, Washington, the fourth child of Robert Leroy and Gertrude Ethel (Rauch) McComas. The family moved from Bellingham to Anacortes in about 1937. Bob met his future wife Barbara Barker while in high school. When WWII broke out Bob entered the Navy. Bob and Barbara were married on July 17, 1943 while he was on leave. He spent the next two years deployed to the South Pacific. Upon his discharge from the Navy they returned to Anacortes. In 1952 they purchased their home on 9 th Street where they raised their family and lived until 2018. Bob spent most of his working career working for Scott Paper and when the mill in Anacortes closed, he commuted to the Everett mill for over 8 years before retiring in 1988.
Bob had many hobbies. He loved hunting and fishing, boating, travelling with Barb and their dogs in their travel trailer, he bowled on a commercial league for many years, and he and Barb both volunteered for the Citizens Patrol through the police department for many years. He loved his garden and the apples and pears from his trees were delicious and shared by many. However, Bob's biggest passion was woodworking. He spent countless hours in his shop building boats, between 8 feet to 18 feet in length, furniture; tables and chairs, bedroom sets, cabinets and chests, picnic tables, benches, planters, and lots of toys and playsets. He built things for everyone, family, friends, neighbors and even strangers. If you ever needed a tool Bob usually had at least one you could borrow, or he'd just help you do the job. He had a heart of pure gold and really enjoyed helping others.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Robert Leroy (1932), and Gertrude (1992); his brother Bruce (1929), his sisters Roberta (Carlson) (2010) and Phyllis (Fox) (2013), his wife of 70 years Barbara (2013), and his daughter-in-law Teri (2016).
Bob leaves behind his 3 children; Robert L McComas (Berte) of Anacortes, WA, Lesley A Cowderoy and her partner George Kremnitz of Mill Creek, WA, and Bruce J McComas of Port Townsend, WA., as well as 6 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many, many close and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be planned for later this summer. To share memories of Bob please sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com . In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity in Bob's name.
