Roger was 87+ when he passed December 13 from this world to his next other-worldly adventure.

He was with his wife and daughter, at home, on a Sunday, after a ten year struggle with dementia.  He was born in Minneapolis, the oldest of five brothers to Bernard and Hertha (Klawitter) Born. He graduated from Patrick Henry High in 1951; a member of the gymnastic team and lettered in swimming. Roger's ambition was to be a Physicist. Lacking the Math and Sciences in high school he persevered in college to earn a BS in Geology with minors in Math and Physics from University of Minnesota, 1956.

In 1957-1967 he joined the U.S. Army Reserves stationed at White Sands Proving Grounds in Las Cruces, NM. There he received an eight week course in programing large scale digital computers. This introduction to his first vacuum tube computer, a UNIVAC 1103, then becoming head operator, initiated his life-long venture into the computer world.

Utilizing his Geology degree Roger worked for the Continental Geophysical Co. (1956-1960) as a geophysical field crew manager and seismic analysist. He joined Sinclair Research Inc. (1960-61) as a seismologist while worked towards his Electrical Engineering Certification (EE 1961-1963, UofM). He joined the Remington Sperry Rand Corp, UNIVAC Division (1961-1966) as an Associate Programmer advanced to System Development Engineer supporting geophysical and oceanographic operations. He worked for Texas Instruments (1966-1971) as a salesman to understand the needs of the consumer while he worked towards a Masters in Business Administration at Southern Methodist University (SMU, 1968-1970), Dallas, TX.  Roger was very proud of being chosen to be in "Who's Who in California 1985-86" for his patent: Methods and Apparatus for Processing Seismic Data in the Field, 1970. He became  a member of MENSA in 1980.

Roger joined Mosler Information Systems, Inc. (1971-72) as a data acquisition systems manager for U.S. ships. During 1972-1974 he worked for the Global Atmospheric Research Programs, NOAA-Data Buoy Office as a technical program manager of an international data collection experiment. He continued data research with Ocean Data Systems Inc. (1974-76) landing in Monterey, CA. There he joined Pro-Log Corp. (1977-1984) as their National Sales Manager. He taught and directed technical marketing and sales activities of microprocessors and joined Intel for an international collaboration. He wrapped up his computer career working as Chief Engineer for Planning Research Corps at Fort Ord, CA (1985-88). Utilizing all his technical and management skills he implemented CAD capabilities and tools for project management adaptable to field experiments; an integrated ballistic missile program.

Not ready to retire, Roger continued his education at Columbia University where he obtained certifications in Business Planning and Finance. He and several Real Estate Brokers started Roger Born Associates which evolved into Roger L. Born Associates Consulting in Technical Business Strategy; then moved to Anacortes, WA.

Roger was not all business and computers he knew how to have fun; scouting, backpacking, golfing, skiing, sailing, traveling and driving his 1970 olive green Ford Mustang Convertible–fast. He volunteered throughout his life. He learned outdoor and practical living skills during his years as a boy scout, became scout leader at all levels and sat on BSA Councils. He assisted in developing two intercity youth groups in Dallas, TX. Introducing kids to outdoor activities and providing meals. He and his brothers learned to ski on snow covered bunny hills on golf courses in Minneapolis.  This led him to organized and lead the Ski Train of 57 buses to Utah for UofM Winterfest 1954. He served on the National Ski Patrol at Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley Ski Resorts in CA for 25 years. Retiring from Ski Patrol he became the Winter Sports/Ski Reporter for the Monterey Herald. It was a very fun endeavor for the family that skied together.

Sailing was his summer passion. He built his first sailboat a Snipe 16' in his garage in MN. He went on to earn his American Sailing Association (ASA) Certificate teaching and sailing OPB's (other peoples' boats). He was involved with getting the Small Boats Organization functioning at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He was a member of the Monterey and Anacortes Yacht Clubs. He was especially proud to earn his USA Merchant Mariner Credential in 2010 to become and official "Captain". He enjoyed working for several Yacht Charter companies in Anacortes, WA. He loved the freedom of being on the water.

Roger volunteered in every city he lived in: lead and formed Boy Scout Troops; taught Bible study classes and sat on Youth Councils. As a member of the Carmel Ski Club he severed in every capacity from President to Treasurer for years. Roger facilitated the NERT program for the City of Monterey, CA.

He was an assistant director for SCRAMP-Sports Club Racing Organization of the Monterey Peninsula at Laguna Seca for twenty plus years. When he became an emergency substitute teacher for the Monterey School District he became aware of the lack of computers in the classrooms; initiated a program to acquire computers for all class levels. Roger, ever the jazz enthusiast, attended the Monterey Jazz Festival for 45 consecutive years.

In Anacortes he joined Afternoon Kiwanis and served as Vice President, President and Past President for the duration of six years. He was the regional representative to the International Kiwanis Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. He also served as Vice President to the Anacortes Historical Museum and was actively involved with the Anacortes Maritime Museum.

Roger is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia Ann Kreider (Patti); their daughter, Ashley of Yosemite, CA;  son Mark and grandson, Justin of Monterey, CA; two step children: Steven Smale(Annie) of Dorset England, Nancy Sue MacDonald (Jim and daughter, Kelly Anne) of Redwood City, CA; their and Mark's mother, Virginia Aders (Reinke) of TN. Two bothers: Dennis (Kathie) of New Ulm, MN and Jerry (Patti) of Buffalo, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins of Minnesota. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Dwayne, Allen and recently Marvin; and half-sister, Doris (Klawitter).

Roger was a multi-talented man filled with smiles and laughter. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was happy in the life he led. We are thankful that Roger is at Peace. His ashes will be interred beside his mother as he requested. A celebration of his life will hopefully be observed on his birthday in July 2021.
