Sunday, October 17th, Roland Cone Culbertson's body of 94 years became obsolete. He was ushered from death to a new life by the One who saves. He had a peaceful passing at home, in Anacortes, with family at his side.

Roland was born June 30, 1927, in Bremerton. He grew up on the farm his dad built on the Union river near Belfair. Upon graduating from High School in 1945, he was drafted into Eisenhower's army. This logger married Virginia Sipe, a school classmate, in 1951.

They moved their young family to Anacortes in 1953 to log Burrows Island. (They did a good job. You'd never know it had been logged.) In 1957 they bought a house (not the land) on March's Point and barged it to Anacortes' West end.

In Anacortes they raised 5 kids: Terry (Carolyn), Gary (Carol), Nancy (David Tarbell), Suzy (Darrell Boyes), and Andy (Kamiyo). Roland was quite clever and did many different kinds of work: logging, demolition, marine construction & pile driving, towing, rock quarrying.

He wasn't a big name around town but many people knew him and his handiwork is all over. For example: He was one of the main people that converted the Walton lumber mill into Skyline, brought the WT Preston sternwheeler to town from Seattle, brought the big breakwater ship La Merced from Seattle to Lovric's, and built or repaired most every dock in town.

He enjoyed people, working and helping. His smile and humor will be missed. It was challenging for him to have to stop driving and lonely to see his bride and many Anacortes friends pass on. His legacy will particularly continue through his many children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren around the world who participate in seeing people flourish through their many endeavors such as Christian missions, medicine, and the military. There are several teachers, a veterinarian, a fireman, and even a lawyer!

His family would like to thank Hospice of the Northwest and the many people of Anacortes, whether at the hospital, bank or hardware store, for their kindness and their small-town accommodation.
