Stephen Lucas Kuchin passed peacefully on December 22, 2021 at age 81. Born in Roslyn, Washington to Rosella N. and Fabian S. Kuchin, Steve grew up enjoying the outdoors, fishing, and hunting. He developed a strong work ethic working in the family's grocery store in Roslyn, having a paper route, and raising rabbits for the neighbors. He loved sport fishing, pheasant hunting, and his dogs (especially his German shorthaired pointers). His recent pets (Rosie, Gretchen and Ruby) were the joys of his life. After high school in Cle Elum, he went to Central Washington, graduating with a degree in education. He came to Anacortes in 1966 to teach fifth grade and coached basketball at Island Elementary School for 14 years. He loved his kids and teaching them science. He had a young family at this time, so to make ends meet he started to fish commercially in the Puget Sound and Alaska. Over the next 30+ years he created a seafood business, gill netted for salmon, crabbed for Dungeness, and pioneered the prawn fishery in the Puget Sound. Steve had marketing skills drawn from his childhood working in the grocery store and was able to make his fishing business profitable. He was a hard worker all of his life. Steve is survived by his brother Fabian S. Kuchin, sons Steven Charles Kuchin and Mark Allen Kuchin, his beloved granddaughter Sarah Nicole Kuchin, and his long-time partner Val Aadsen. Steve will be greatly missed by his many friends. A celebration of his life is planned for late spring or early summer when the weather is nicer.
