Stuart McIndoe, age 84, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2023 (Earth Day) surrounded by family. Stuart was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. Stuart was born on April 21, 1939, in Portland, Oregon to James Francis McIndoe and Imogen Wentworth McIndoe but grew up in Sausalito, California, graduating from Tamalpias High School in Mill Valley in 1957.

Stuart got his degree in Architecture from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. After college, he enrolled in Officer Cadet School with the Navy in Rhode Island. After three years in the Navy, Stuart returned to California and began work as an architect for Wong and Brocchini Architects (later Brocchini Architects, Inc.) in San Francisco.

Stuart was a talented architect and artist who did beautiful drawings of various projects he worked on. During his long career, Stuart worked on several local projects, including Mill Valley Middle School and the dorms at UC Santa Cruz.

In 1978 Stuart married Gretchen Gericke Hylton. They lived in Sebastopol, California for over 40 years, raising their blended family. The family spent countless hours hiking and beachcombing at one of Stuart's favorite places, Point Reyes National Seashore. Camping and backpacking vacations took them to many national parks across the country, including in Hawaii and Alaska.

Stuart worked for Brocchini Architects until retiring in 2003. After retirement, Stuart played tennis regularly with neighbors and enjoyed working with Gretchen in their large garden in Sebastopol. Stuart and Gretchen loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures together. They were able to travel to all 7 continents and experience many different cultures. While they enjoyed multiple trips to Europe, their love of nature and wild areas took them to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Peru, and Antarctica. An avid photographer, Stuart shared their many adventures with friends and family with "extensive" slide shows.

Stuart volunteered for several organizations including building houses with Habitat for Humanity, assisting with science projects as a teacher's aide at Lu Sudon Elementary School in Novato, working to house homeless families with Family Connection, and welcoming visitors as an Elephant Seal Docent at Point Reyes National Seashore.

Stuart is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gretchen McIndoe, older brother Bates (Judy) McIndoe, and BIL Rick Gordon. He is also survived by two daughters from his first marriage with Judi Rocchia, two stepchildren, their spouses and six grandchildren. They include his daughters Jennifer and Tiffany, stepchildren Amy and Paul, and grandchildren, Andrew, Maya, Lauren, Alison, Abigail, and Jocelyn. Stuart is preceded in death by both of his parents and his beloved sister, Annie Gordon ("Kiddo").

Although helping others and protecting nature was very important to Stuart, his family was the most important thing in his life. He was always there when his family needed him, especially to "fix" or build things. He loved family gatherings and never wanted them to end. He will be greatly missed.
