Susie Margaret Cawley, 90 of Anacortes, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2022.  She was born on May 12, 1932 in Codette, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Frank and Susana (Peters) Dyck.

Susie's early childhood for the first 15 years of her life were spent in Saskatchewan, growing up with her two brothers, Bill and Henry.  Susie learned farm chores early in life, being responsible for feeding chickens, pigs and milking cows. These chores proved challenging during her teenage years. Much to her chagrin she learned that her having long fingernails would give the milk cows a fit, leading her father to excuse her from the milking chore.  She would feed the pigs after dark to avoid the embarrassment of running into the boy whom she crushed on and who worked across the street from where she lived. In addition to her farm chores, she became a babysitter to earn extra money for the family.

At the age of 15, Susie's family ventured west to Vancouver, BC. She found employment in a grocery store and met her future best friend, Martha, working next door. Together they would attend dances or the movies, oftentimes without parental knowledge. During one of their outings, Susie met Harold Jacobson from Lynden, Washington.  They married in 1951 which resulted in the birth of her only child Robert (Bob). The Jacobsons settled in the Green River Valley town of Auburn, Washington.  Susie found her 'dream job' as a telephone operator for a telephone company there, which turned into a career for her where she excelled and promoted to Supervisor/Manager capacity. She continued with the company through the 1980s.

In 1962, Susie became eligible for US Citizenship, she became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

Susie and her second husband, Dave Cawley retired to Battle Ground, Washington where they remodeled an old farmhouse on 20 acres.  They were able to spend their winters traveling throughout the US, Canada and Mexico.  After years of traveling in their RV, they settled on Indio, California as their winter home.  The friendships they made there lasted for many, many years as they golfed, swam, did crafts and of course, happy hours.

In 2005, they moved permanently to Anacortes, Washington. Susie would go on to become a volunteer in Anacortes with Island Hospital and the PBY Museum in Oak Harbor, Washington.  She brought smiles to the faces of visitors and staff alike.  Susie was a big fan of both the Mariners and the Seahawks – in good times and the not so good times. She enjoyed her independence and could be found with her many friends having lunch and playing the slots at the casino on Senior Day.  To say she would be missed is an understatement.

Her family gratefully thanks her caregiver/pseudo daughter, Laura and the Hospice of the NW for the superior care given as her health declined.

Susie will be laid to rest at Fernhill Cemetery in Anacortes, on Saturday, November 19 ^th at 1:00 p.m. She is survived by her son Bob and his wife Rebecca.
