Dr. Joseph Norman Barnes, 88, of Anacortes, Washington died Thursday, October 22, 2015 at his home in Anacortes. He was born on July 7, 1927 in Denver, Colorado, the son of Lee Charles and Mable (Thomas) Barnes. Joe attended High School at the Campion Academy in Loveland, CO. He obtained his B.A. degree in biology and theology in 1947 from Union College in Lincoln, NE. Joe earned a Masters degree (with honors) from Harvard Divinity School and his PhD. (with honors) from New York University in 1962. He married his college sweetheart Agnes Lou Nichols in 1946. Joe's career included ministry in New Bedford, MA; Boston, MA and New York City from 1947 to 1962. He became director of the New York Center for Education in 1955 and served in that capacity until 1962. Joe moved to College Place, WA in 1962 and became Associate Professor of Theology and Sociology at Walla Walla University and Walla Walla Community College. He retired in 1992 when the family moved to Anacortes, building their "dream" home on Sunset Lane. Dr. Barnes was well known for his many seminars and lectures on marriage and family and stress management which he presented across the country and overseas. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Mabel Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Agnes; a son, Joseph Dale Barnes, of College Place, WA; daughters, Sherilyn Walford and family of The Dalles, OR.and Lorinda Snow and family of Troutdale, OR.; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be held at a later date in college Place, WA. Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.
