Mila was the only surviving child born to peasant farmers in the Northern part of the country of Korea. Her dad passed away when she was only nine, and her mother from an accident while Mila was in nursing school at the age of 19. Left alone, she escaped the invading Chinese communists in the early 1950s by walking the distance of the Korean peninsula to attempt boarding a ship to Japan. She was denied passage because she traveled with only the clothes on her back and had no identification papers. She returned to where she began her walk but became so desperate to escape the troubles in Korea that she made the long walk a second time, and once again, her attempt failed. She found herself struggling to survive, homeless, and dependent on the generosity of others for food and shelter.

She eventually found employment with the United States Army, working as a store clerk. A handsome American soldier, named John, came to the store every day to buy his favorite candy bar from his favorite girl. It was love at first sight for this unlikely couple. Despite the administrative difficulties in attempting to get married in Korea, they became married in Seoul in December. 22, 1953.

Mila became pregnant with her first child and her baby girl was delivered by a midwife in a cottage in the small village of Inchon. When the baby was three months old, the small family flew to America. This is where Mila underwent professional medical care for the first time in her life. Mila quickly sought to become a U.S. citizen. She was always patriotic and supremely grateful for her very blessed life in America. Mila & John were happily married for 65 years when John passed away in 2019. They were loving parents to their three children: Jean Kohl, Elaine & George Bulloch and are survived by them as well as grandparents to: Michael, Alexa, Monica (Daniel Egbert) & Deanna Kohl.
