Maja
Gowan
May 6, 1945 — Nov 21, 2025
Anacortes
Maja Gowan, 80, passed away peacefully with her family close by.
Born in Hamburg, Germany. Maja came to the United States at age 5 and built a life full of kindness and unwavering strength. She lived in upstate New York, Washington, D.C., and eventually the Pacific Northwest, earning a Bachelor's in Education from Kingston University and a Masters in Educational Psychology from the University of Washington. She collected friends, memories, and stories with abandon. These stories include jail time in Mexico (she plead innocent), misplaced faith in Fiat engineering, and a much-loved incident where her daughter loudly proclaimed aspects of anatomy at a BBQ.
Maja spent much of her life as a teacher and counselor, work she loved deeply, and reminded anyone who would listen about. She had a gentle way with children, an open heart, and boundless insight. And in true "Maja fashion," she made sure everything around her was always neat and tidy — a trait her family remembers with a smile. She also loved to travel, leveraging her aptitude in four languages to highlight her keen and often silly observations.
Maja is survived by her husband and "sweat" heart Ron Gowan, her daughter, Tawney Gowan, and her grandson, Damien Gowan-Lesage, who brought her endless amusement and just a little stress when he would fly expensive drones far, far out of sight.
She will be remembered for her warmth, her European sensibilities, and the love she gave so freely.
