Jan “Jon” Paszkowski, age 86, of Anacortes, Washington, passed away at his residence on October 2, 2026.
Born September 12, 1940, in Brześć nad Bugiem, Poland, to Jan and Katarzyna (Kasznikowich) Paszkowski, Jon arrived in the Anacortes area as a young child and had been a resident for 76 years.
In the aftermath of World War II, the Paszkowski family—parents Jan and Katarzyna and their seven children—were displaced persons living in a camp in West Germany. Through the sponsorship of the First Baptist Church of Anacortes and the Baptist World Alliance Relief Committee, the family was able to immigrate to the United States. They arrived in Anacortes in early 1950, where the church helped arrange a temporary home and then assisted them in establishing a permanent one.
Jon graduated from Anacortes High School with the Class of 1959. He spent 37 years as a Spreader Specialist in the lumber industry, where he was valued for the precision and safety he brought to operations. He was employed by the Anacortes Plywood Mill (1959–1983), the Bellingham Plywood Mill (1985–1997), and a woodworking company in Bayview that specialized in producing thick plywood used in the manufacture of ski boards in Canada. He retired in 2003.
Jon married Kandice Mae Bean on February 2, 1974, in Anacortes. She preceded him in death on September 15, 2015. A skilled and generous jack-of-all-trades, he loved woodworking and built displays for knick-knacks, hope chests, baby cribs, and similar pieces. He was equally passionate about automobiles of all kinds, including antiques. His pride and joy was a 1956 Lincoln Premiere, which he acquired and restored to running condition. Over the years he worked on more than 100 non-operational vehicles by purchasing them and performing repairs so others could own reliable transportation economically. He never charged for his labor—only the cost of purchase, plus parts and materials—because he simply loved the work, and all of it was done in his garage. He also enjoyed the sport of shuffleboard. A hardworking provider who never took vacations, he cherished the ordinary days he spent with his family.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Alexander and Antonio; his sisters Maria Begei, Tatiana Munson, Aksenia Dikum, and Julie Mendoza; his beloved wife of 41 years, Kandice; and his son William C. Paszkowski. He is survived by his son Joseph S. Paszkowski, his daughter Katarzyna M. Paszkowski (Jordan Berry), his grandchildren Amber, Elizabeth, and Adam, and his sister Anna Hodson.
He is laid to rest at Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes. A celebration of his life is being planned; details will be posted at www.evanschapel.com/obituary/jon-paszkowski
